Alonso on Verstappen: "I could be his advisor but I would want a lot of money!"

Alonso on Verstappen: "I could be his advisor but I would want a lot of money!"

As the British Grand Prix weekend draws to a close, speculation about Max Verstappen’s future at Red Bull and a possible move to Mercedes continues apace.

These rumours also coincide with Red Bull’s declining performance in recent weeks, with the team currently down to fourth in the constructors’ championship, while Mercedes celebrated its first race win of the season with George Russell’s victory at the Canadian GP.

Although many drivers have expressed their opinions on this issue so far, the media was waiting with great curiosity to see what Fernando Alonso, the most experienced name on the grid, would say.

And Alonso was quick to respond with his trademark sarcasm: "No, I don't give advice!"

"So I could be a consultant, but I would want a lot of money. So I'm not giving advice right now."

Alonso continued by mentioning 2026: "We all know that next year is a big opportunity."

"It's not just for Aston, it's for many teams that want to play for the top. Next year the rules are reset and we all want to be in a position where we can fight for bigger goals."

When asked about his expectations for the weekend, Alonso said: "Friday will be busy, that's for sure."

"We will have to test the new parts. We will try different packages and setups in practice, combining programs with both cars. Hopefully the weather will be dry because that is very important for us to understand the package."

"But to be honest, this package that we bring is smaller than the one in Imola. So it's a very small update on the base, there's no visible difference. But of course every piece that we bring is valuable and we'll try to do our best to make the most of it."

"If we can get points it would be a good weekend for us, I don't think anything more than that is possible."

"The top four teams are way ahead of everyone else. So the top eight cars will be out of reach for the rest of the season."
